Vintage Merita Bread Lone Ranger Sign
This 1954 vintage Merita Bread Lone Ranger sign is said to be one of the most sought after pieces of advertising among collectors.  An original in mint condition can bring as much as $12,000 at high-end auctions.  Experts say its vibrant colors, subject matter and deep embossing make it valuable.  I spotted this one inside a booth at Renningers Antique Market in Mount Dora, Florida.  While the owner was asking a hefty sum for the sign, it looked to be a reproduction.

The BIG Twist in Mount Dora, Florida

There’s just something about finding good soft serve ice cream.  If it’s really good, you’ll do whatever it takes to get it, even if it means driving an hour.  That’s exactly how I feel about The Big Twist in Mount Dora.  Jeremy DiFiore originally opened the shop in the town’s historic district a couple of years ago.  Located at the front entrance to an antique mall, The Big Twist only featured soft serve ice cream and outside seating.  Then in 2010, Jeremy decided to cater more to locals and relocated the shop to the Lake Louise Plaza on U.S. 441.  Now, in addition to soft serve, The Big Twist stocks a good selection of Hershey brand hard ice cream and has plenty of outdoor and indoor seating.  Jeremy has even expanded his offerings to include Nathans hot dogs, soups, deluxe nachos, sundaes, ice cream cakes and smoothies.  My favorite will always be the Orange Crush Float.  It was the first thing I tried at the old location and was just as tasty when I visited earlier today.

The Big Twist is located at 17195 U.S. 441.  It’s across from Wal-Mart and next to Office Depot.  For more information, call (352) 589-8978 or visit The Big Twist website.
